From September 18 to 21, Madrid hosted the first edition of the Festival of Ideas, an event created to celebrate all forms of thought and the generation of ideas. During the festival, a variety of activities took place, including talks, philosophical walks, speaker’s corner debates, and philosophical cafés spread throughout the city.
This significant event brought together some of the most prominent minds in contemporary thought, both from Spain and abroad, such as Peter Sloterdijk, Michael Sandel, Wendy Brown, Eva Illouz, Élisabeth Roudinesco, Javier Gomá, and Marina Garcés. The main venues for the festival were Plaza de España and the Círculo de Bellas Artes.

THE CHALLENGE
The design studio underbau developed the graphic image of the festival, drawing from two major influences. The first influence comes from the European avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, where artists and thinkers became prominent figures, shaping culture and society through manifestos and iconic magazines such as Blast and Orfeus. These publications, along with the early Bauhaus manifestos, inspired the festival’s visual identity. Another influence is the graphic style of U.S. festival and concert posters from the 1960s, a key period in the development of mass culture and the Star System. The central idea is that thinkers are the new rock stars.
Starting with the polygonal shape of the star, I created a series of portraits of the festival’s speakers based on the straight lines and pure forms of the Bauhaus (triangle, square, and circle).
Additionally, adapting the style for the portraits, I created illustrations to describe what the festival and its activities would be like. These illustrations were published in El País, one of the most widely circulated newspapers in Spain.
